INTEGERS!

This product is a little different from the ones that we have posted as it is for older grades.  I started teaching integers in Grade 6 but you will have to see where it fits in your curriculum.

This unit covers everything you would need to teach an introduction to integers all the way to dividing.  

When I was teaching I would tend to have a "note-taking" day before we get into any sort of practice.  Having a Math Journal set up for your students is an excellent tool.  That way all of their important notes on whatever topic you are teaching is right there for them, rather than trying to look back in their notebooks where it can get lost. Spending a class, or two, going over everything they will learn in the unit will save you lots of time in the end.  

This is where this presentation fits in well.  It is a 64 slide presentation covering everything you need.   It highlights important information, has some practice, has hands-on activities, and discussion. You just have to let the presentation lead your teaching.  The presentation is broken down into segments so you can gauge how much you want to teach in one day.  

Even though some of the topics are not what you may have to teach, I would still show them.  There is nothing wrong with looking ahead and teaching ahead of your grade as long as your students are not being graded on the work they are doing.  Only evaluate areas that should be covered in their curriculum for their report card.

There is a lot of information on the slides and I definitely don't recommend putting it up without going through it beforehand. 

After you have covered the note-taking part of the unit you can use any of the handouts that have been created to assess what they have learned.   Also included are cut-outs and templates you may use.  There are 3 different sizes of a number line for you to use.  Just cut and put it together.  I would recommend students make their own number line, but I have included student templates just incase you have some students that would struggle with that task.

All of the following products are activities that would go along with your unit.  They all are quick and easy to prepare.  If you want longer lasting durability I would print on cardstock and laminate if you can.  All these products have easy to understand instructions on how to use them.

I have, who has?

 A fun and engaging activity for the whole class.  A great way to practice letter and letter sounds.  

The package can be printed in black and white or colour.  

Easy to use.  

Print and laminate.

Pass out one or two cards to each student. 

the student that has the letter a says, I have a who has b?  The person who has b says, I have b who has c and so on, until you reach z.  Student can also say the letter sound instead of the letter name.

Heart Word practice cards

 Pre primer heart word practice cards is a stand alone activity, but will soon be part of a Science of Reading Aligned Level 2 reading unit.  

Use the cards in a variety of ways.

1. use as homework

2. extra work for early finishers

3.  part of your daily literacy activities

News Telling

 One thing I find students struggle with is telling something with enough detail  that they convey what they intend to say.  Adults usually have to ask many questions to get the all the info.  Students require practice.  The practice should be purposeful.  This activity gives the students a purposeful practice time.  

What is included is: a letter for home explaining how News Telling works.  A form to fill out to make sure that what the student is sharing is worth sharing.  Not what they had for dinner.  '

          

Informing families of what is needed is important and a great way to bridge the family/school connection.

                                                  

Allowing the students to fill out the form gives them a chance to purposeful think about what they want to share and organize their ideas and thoughts in a cohesive way.  

Introduce News Telling to the whole class by example.  Tell them something you would like them to know.  You started gardening, a book you read and would totally recommend it,  you started learning something new.  Anything you deem news worthy.  

The student's then will want to do the same.  Send home the notes to the families.  When students come back with the forms filled out give them an opportunity to Tell their News at your morning meeting.   If it becomes too many don't worry parents don't always want to fill out the form on a daily bases.

Star of The Week

I know students love show and tell.  They look forward to their turn.  But even the students and the parents find it difficult to think of something to bring in to show and share that isn't a toy.  And I don't know about you but it was really difficult to listen to the other students questions.  "Do you like it?"  "Where do you keep it?"  "Who gave it to you". Boring and they don't really reveal anything about the student who brought the item in. 

This alternative activity is a great balance for both you and the students.  The students will look forward to their turn and the feeling of excitement will last a whole week.  You will help facilitate the questions the other students ask.  Meaningful questions that help the rest of the class get to know that student.

Best way to start Star of the Week is to be the star yourself.  Give great examples
of what to bring in, of what questions the other students could ask.  

STUDENT WRITE UP FROM THE QUESTIONS ASKED BY CLASSMATES

This is what the class will fill in for the star of the week.  Then put it together so the student has a keepsake to take home.  (Star of the Week booklet) While the class is busy writing and drawing for the Star of the Week, I let the star either have iPad time or Smartboard time something that the students only get to do that once in a while.  

When all the the students have had a turn you can type up the question response (picture above)and use it as yearbook for the end of the year.

Headbands

 Have an extra 5 min?  Not sure how to entertain the class?  This activity is for you.  

The activity promotes vocabulary, thinking outside the box, detailed thoughts and descriptions.  A great way to promote science terms such as alive, non-living, describing an items such as man-made, not man made, gas, liquid, sold etc.  

Make a head band out of cardstock.  Clip the picture onto the from of the cardstock.  

When the cards are laminated they will last longer.  I use Swingline 13".  You can purchase it here at amazon.ca. There are a lot of laminators online but I found this one years ago and it still works great.  I also have a larger size one that will process 11x17 sheets.  If you think you'd use that size then I'd recommend this one. Amazon.ca. I would use the 5ml laminating sheets for the cards as they will used quite a bit and that will be best for overall use.  These are the 3 ml. I use for most items. Click HERE. I have used Popsicle sticks (the dollar store)and print students names on them to pick who gets to wear the headband.  Once the Popsicle sticks have all been been chosen I'll turn the Popsical stick upside down.  Once they are all upside down I start the choosing all over again.

100 DAY Celebrations (K - Grade 2)

 Wow! You made it to 100 days of school!  You need to pat yourself on the back.  Or take a short break!   But we've got you covered for the whole day.  

In our bundle we have included a family letter, letting them know about your plans for the day.  A note about dressing up as 100 years old and if you wish for your students to collect 100 of something.  There are a couple example letters to choose from.  

One activity my students got the giggles out of is chair exercises.  I'd tell them that because they are old its more difficult to move and balance so we sit while we exercise.  So just look up  a chair exercise on Youtube.  It a great way to start off your day.  

Then you can go through the presentation and pick and choose what you would like to do.  

There are many slides that go directly with activity pages.  Some of these sections may take you awhile to complete.  There are activities in counting to 100, money (canadian), measurement (mm,cm), time, creative writing, calendar....there's a lot you can do with this presentation. And some of these activites and parts of the presentation can be used when you are teaching those topics at other times of the year. 

Once you've gone through the presentation, put out the activities around your classroom and let the students roam around and play.    Because there are so many activities my colleagues and I would  put 4 - 5 activities in each classroom and the students roam to each classroom and choose what they'd like to do.
